September 11, 2009
Taiwanese telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom plans to launch HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Evolution) services - with an uplink speed of 2Mbps and a downlink speed of 14Mbps - in 2010, Taiwan's Commercial Times reported on September 8. To achieve this goal, Chunghwa Telecom stated that the company has entered into a NT$3.0 billion (US$92.0 million; US$1 = NT$32.6) supply agreement with Nokia Siemens, whereby the latter will supply 3.75G base stations to the operator. Under the agreement, Nokia Siemens will deliver services to Chunghwa Telecom, including network implementation and design, optimization, system integration, and maintenance services, along with base stations and related mobile applications. Aside from Chunghwa Telecom, Nokia Siemens also landed a similar contract for US$869 million from Chinese telecom operator China Mobile in early July, 2009.
